Indians back with MIC – P.Kamalanathan

Newly-elected Hulu Selangor member of parliament P. Kamalanathan declared, moments after the announcement of results, that his victory meant Indians now identified themselves with the aspirations of the ruling coalition. “Indians are back with MIC but that doesn’t mean the work is over. We still have a lot more to do,” Kamalanathan said.

The by-election saw the MIC man increasing the Indian support by at least eight per cent to about 60 per cent in an electorate where they make up close to 20 per cent of the voters. In the 2008 general election, the Indian support was only about 52 per cent but in the 2004 elections, support was up to 90 per cent. He said one of his main tasks will now be to bring the support back to the pre-2008 levels.

Acknowledging that a huge task was awaiting him, Kamalanathan said he now had to fulfil all the BN promises to the people. “However, my first task will be to thank all the voters in the area. It does not matter if they voted for me or not. They are all my constituents now and I will meet and serve all of them. “The trust and mandate given clearly shows how BN can serve the people in Hulu Selangor. I will meet Sungai Buaya residents tomorrow to express my sincere gratitude to them. “I regard this victory as not mine, but that of the entire BN machinery which had worked round the clock to ensure my victory.”

He described his victory as one that belonged to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his deputy, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu and everyone else who had worked hard for him. He said his victory showed the people accepted the leadership of Najib. He said he would shift from his house in Taman Kuala Garing, Rawang, to an area in Hulu Selangor as it would allow him to serve the people better.
