Shahrizat New Wanita
KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil ended Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz’s long reign in Wanita Umno when she won the movement’s number one post.
Shahrizat secured 507 votes against Rafidah’s 280 votes, a victory that was rather expected as over the past few days she was said to be having the edge over her more seasoned rival who had ruled the movement for 21 of the last 25 years.
Rafidah’s defeat was the second as Wanita leader, after losing out to Datuk Dr Siti Zaharah Sulaiman in 1996 by a 27-vote majority. She came back to reclaim the crown in the next round four years later.
The defeat also drew the curtains on Rafidah’s illustrious career since taking over from Tan Sri Aishah Ghani in 1984.
Shahrizat’s No. 2 is Datuk Kamilia Ibrahim, who had won the movement’s deputy head post uncontested.
Counting of votes at the Dewan Tun Abdul Razak was rather slow and when protests were made, re-counting had to be done for both the Youth and Puteri elections.
Shahrizat and her supporters, including her two children and husband, arrived about 6.30pm when word got around that she had won.
Many of her supporters started to gather around to hug and kiss her as it became clear that victory was in her grasp.
Rafidah was, however, not present when permanent chairman Tan Sri Napsiah Omar announced the official results about 9pm as she was attending the Umno supreme council meeting chaired by out-going Umno president Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting later, Rafidah said she accepted the decision of the delegates and congratulated the new chief and her exco line-up.
She hoped that the new leaders would take good care of Wanita Umno and serve the party, the people and the nation well.
Results of the other key posts in Wanita included that of the deputy permanent chairman which went to Saripah Aminahbi Syed Mohd.
Twenty others elected as executive council members were Hasnah Salam, Datuk Maznah Hamid, Rosni Zahari, Armani Maharuddin, Norhayati Onn, Datuk Norhayati Omar, Rosnah Kassim, Marlia Abd Latif, Noriah Mahad, Ros Suryati Alang, Jamilah Abu Bakar, Suraya Yaakob, Azihani Ali, Norliza Abd Rahim, Sharifah Azizah Syed Zin, Datuk Maznah Mazlan, Azizah Mohd Dun, Seripah Noli Syed Hussin, Norliza Ahmad and Wan Hazani Wan Mohd Nor.
