Devamany New Treasurer-General

      Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk S.K. Devamany has been appointed MIC treasurer-general with immediate effect.Party president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu confirmed the appointment.
Devamany, the two-time Cameron Highlands MP, takes over from veteran Tan Sri M. Mahalingam, who was removed as the treasurer-general last Tuesday.Devamany, 51, thanked Samy Vellu for appointing him to the post.

“I will take the job with great responsibility as there is a long road ahead of us,” he said.“We must strive to bring back the support of the Indian masses to the party.“This is a heavy responsibility which has to be shouldered by all MIC leaders,” he added.

Devamany, who joined the MIC in 1986, obtained his primary and secondary education in Taiping and attended the Specialist Teachers Training Institute in Cheras in 1977.He qualified as a teacher in 1978, and went on to further his studies. He obtained an honours degree, majoring in Malay Literature, from Universiti Malaya in 1982.

In 1995, he left the teaching profession and co-founded the Rifa Group of Engineering College. He quit after being chosen to contest the Cameron Highlands parliamentary seat in 2004.He retained the seat for the ruling Barisan Nasional in the 2008 elections and was appointed a deputy minister.

Devamany is also a member of the Parliamentary Select Committee and the National Integrity Committee.He was awarded a datukship by the Sultan of Pahang in October
